Come Down For My Downfall.

It's a time for press releases right now as I set to work on promoting the various forthcoming Mostly Comedy dates and rather crucially (as it's being filmed it to showcase my comedic ways) a performance of my recent solo show at the Market Theatre in Hitchin.

In the case of Mostly Comedy it's working out nicely, as the last-minute edit of a press release I'd originally written for St Albans' aborted October line-up (which has since moved to Hitchin) and sent to The Comet on a whim on Monday has resulted in some excellent coverage in today's edition; this should help boost sales for the show, which is perfect as it only went on sale last weekend.

David Ephgrave: My Part in His Downfall
at The Market Theatre in Hitchin on Thursday 11th October 2018 at 7:30pm.


On 11th October, local comedian and one half of the duo behind Hitchin’s popular monthly club Mostly Comedy David Ephgrave performs his most recent Edinburgh Fringe show at the Market Theatre so he can film it for posterity; a show that got him into the i Newspaper, Scotsman and Edinburgh Evening News’ Best Fringe Jokes lists.

In ‘David Ephgrave: My Part in His Downfall’, the 1991 Warner Wagtails talent contest-winner, frontman of 1998’s Best Band in Hertfordshire and 2002’s Most Promising Drama Student pinpoints the moment things went wrong; how can one reviewer’s “devastatingly witty” be another’s “festival of mediocrity”? David shows you how.

The majority of the material is drawn from David’s daily blog (www.mostlydavidephgrave.blogspot.com), which he’s kept since 2013, and documents the trials and tribulations of a performer who’s stretched the definition of “up-and-coming” over sixteen years.

David is an actor, musician and stand-up and the back end of the comic duo Doggett & Ephgrave. Most recently, he featured amongst the Daily Telegraph’s 20 Funniest One-liners of the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe and Comedy Central’s 35 Funniest Jokes of the Year (2017) plus i Newspaper’s 50 Best Jokes, The Scotsman’s 40 Best Jokes and Edinburgh Evening News’ 40 Funnest One-Liners of 2018 Edinburgh Fringe lists.

Credits with D & E include (in brief): eleven seasons with The Comedy Project at the Soho Theatre, various stand-up shows on the Edinburgh, Brighton, Camden and Leicester Fringe – plus Mostly Comedy, their decade-old monthly comedy club at The Sun Hotel in Hitchin, Hertfordshire (and formerly at London’s Leicester Square Theatre). A notable D&E career highlight was reading an episode of their self-written sitcom Nick & Joe at the Soho Theatre, alongside a cast including Michael Barrymore and Norman Lovett (Holly in ‘Red Dwarf’).

David’s solo acting credits include playing Beatles legend Paul McCartney in the No. 1 Tour of The Roy Orbison Story, Buddy Holly in the UK / Ireland Tour of Buddy Holly and the Cricketers and Richard in the West End production of Dreamboats and Petticoats.

David took his first solo stand-up show, ‘…and Ephgrave’, to the 2015 Brighton and Camden Fringe Festivals, his second, 'Mostly David Ephgrave', to Brighton and Edinburgh in 2016, his third, 'Now Who's a Comedian', to Edinburgh in 2017 - and his fourth, 'David Ephgrave: My Part in His Downfall' to Edinburgh in August 2018.

The show takes place at The Market Theatre in Hitchin on Thursday 11th October at 7:30pm, with support TBA. Tickets are £6 and can be booked in advance at www.mostlycomedy.co.uk

Stevenage: A (Tiny) River Runs Through it.

If ever a river was mis-sold, it’s the Roaring Meg in Stevenage. I just walked past it on my way to the retail park that has taken its name. They’re similarly uninspiring. The river is less of a roar and more of a dribble; cystitis sufferers produce greater flow. The retail park is soulless. What was once a thriving enterprise is nearly devoid of atmosphere, save an underlying essence of emptiness and despair. With a Toys R Us. When it was first built I was excited. Back then, the thought of a bowling alley, an ice rink, a Harvester and a Blockbuster Video within a small surface area was enticing. I celebrated many birthdays on site. There was an indoor cricket pitch there for a while where I once had a joint party with a friend. Hoo-ray and up She Rises.

So much has happened since my last post in March that this blog risks sounding like an itinerary. The main news is that Hitchin Mostly Comedy will return in the summer at a new venue, the Queen Mother Theatre . The road to this decision was convoluted, though enough fell into place en route to leave me optimistic about this new start. The catalyst was a survey I ran via our mailing list a few months back, in which I asked, "If the club returned in the current climate, with tickets still around £15 (and with similar line-ups), would you still attend?"; the response to which, in simple terms, was a resounding yes. Nearly 250 mailing list subscribers responded in a single week, with around a hundred also taking the option to leave some feedback. And only two people were abusive, which counts as a win when you consider they posted their comments online anonymously.
