GBBO 2016: Volume Ten (26.10.16)

And so, that’s it. The last BBC series of The Great British Bake Off draws to a close, with an ending more emotional than the final shot of Blackadder Goes Forth spliced with the snowman melting to the tune of Aled Jones. It’s sad to think it’s done, and the dream team of Mel, Sue, Paul & Mary must part (until the BBC entices the majority of them back with a different format). In the same way that Brexit means Brexit, C4 no doubt means C4. Still, it was fun while it lasted. Who knows?: maybe the move will breathe new life into the proverbial oven; we’ll have to wait and see. Below you’ll find tonight's live tweets. I’m glad Candice won, though I did mourn the lack of Selasi. How long before he hosts a show with Nadiya? Not long, I hope. 8:01pm: Continuity Announcer: "...but who will be crowned as the winner?" (Answer: Love Productions, at £25million). 8:02pm: Andrew Eddie Red(head)mayne. 8:03pm: Paul Hollyw...

Twitter Mash-up.

Intriguingly, two of my tweets were quoted in articles on the social media-centric website-cum-blog Mashable in the last three weeks. Both related to television programmes that are popular fodder on Twitter: The Great British Bake Off and University Challenge . I find this more exciting than I probably should. It’s flattering to be referenced, as it suggests that I got something ‘right’, (whatever that means in this context). I have a habit of being Twitter-trigger-happy with these shows, which is perhaps surprising, as I shun a lot of current popular culture and reality TV. My friend Stephen - who’s a regular guest on Doggett & Ephgrave’s radio show - is even more of a Troglodyte than me, and would no doubt be ashamed if he was aware of my slightly skewed, out-of-character interests and habits. (I’m still talking about Twitter.) Tweeting along with these shows is par for the course when you're a comedian, or at least, that’s how I’d justify it to Steve. In re...

Let Them Tweet Cake.

Yesterday, I reached the dizzy heights of Twitter superstardom.   It had to come around one day, let’s face it. It's a question of fate. When I vacated my mother’s womb in mid-1981, my social media turning point was predestined. He, whose He is spelt with a capital H (I'm referring to God) already knew that four years later, less than twenty miles from my birthplace, a girl would be born who'd discover a love for baking at twenty years old - and a decade later, I would comment on it. Such is the wonder of the Universe. (…and now I’ll stop being a dick.) I’m not surprised that my most popular tweet to date is about the Great British Bake Off; it was either that or Strictly Come Dancing. Despite going against my character – or 140 of them – I’m addicted to both shows. I like to watch people with skill (in the case of the GBBO contestants or the Strictly professionals) or people learning one (as in the Strictly celebs). I also love cake and Claudia Wink...
