'University Challenged: Week Eighteen' (20.11.17)

Tonight’s University Challenge was - as with her last appearance on the show - completely overshadowed by St John’s Cambridge’s McKeown’s outfit. As my first tweet of the evening put it, she looked like a walking affectation; There’s a slim chance that her style choices formed completely naturally over time, but I, for one, doubt it. She’s like a child dressed as an adult, and an irritating adult at that; if she wrote an autobiography it would be filed under fiction (I think I’ve made my point). See below for a record of my live tweets from tonight, for posterity, like: St John's - Cambridge Vs. Corpus Christi - Cambridge (20.11.17) 8:02PM: McKeown is a walking affectation. 8:04PM: Roberts looks like Langly, one of the Lone Gunmen from the X Files. 8:04PM: Roberts should smoke a pipe. I hope he smokes a pipe. 8:07PM: McKeown looks like that English teacher at secondary school you never connected with, wh...

University Challenged: Volume Twenty-Four (13.02.17).

Tonight’s episode of University Challenge was the first I’d seen as it went out in weeks. In the interim, every time I’ve missed the show, I’ve covered it here after the event, in a ‘see what I would have tweeted’ stylie. While this suits my OCD to a point, it’s never quite the same feeling of spontaneity I get when tweeting along with the show , as there’s something less - dare I say it - exciting about it. There’s no sense of opening a dialogue when you’re just writing it on Word to please yourself; it’s nice to have the Internet to bounce off of. See below for tonight’s Tweets; brace yourself for the inevitable thrill. Emmanuel - Cambridge Vs. Corpus Christi - Oxford (13.02.17). 8:01pm: Paxman looks weary. Oh so weary. 8:03pm: Tom Hill's borrowed Joe Brown's hair for the evening. 8:03pm: Homer's Odyssey: D'oh. 8:05pm: Venkatesh's smile is reminiscent of an unrepentant Bates. 8:07pm: ...

University Challenged: Volume Twenty-one (23.01.17)

The end of the current series of University Challenge is sneaking ever closer and inevitably, the faces of the contestants have grown very familiar. We’ve already dined out on Venkatesh’s keenness that masks a slight murderousness and Clarke’s disdainful venom. That’s not to say we can’t enjoy them again, particularly in the case of the latter; my God, did Clarke have a cob on this evening; even Paxman must have approached her tentatively. See below for tonight’s tweets: Bristol Vs. Corpus Christi - Oxford (23.01.17) 7:33pm: Rolleston's wearing a surprisingly narrow waistcoat. 7:34pm: Venkatesh has a murderous resting face. 7:35pm: There's no substance thicker than the lenses of Fleet's glasses. 7:36pm: With a waistcoat like that, it's no wonder Rolleston will end up teaching history. 7:37pm: Mess with Bristol's Clarke at your peril. 7:38pm: Bristol's Clarke is a woman wit...

University Challenged: Volume Nineteen (09.01.17)

I don’t know why tweeting along to University Challenge became a thing I do, but it certainly has. It’s got the point where, if I’m out when it’s on, I start to feel tetchy; “What am I not at home, when I could be being gently snarky about a socially challenged student I’ve never met?” This was nearly the case today, as I was meant to be gigging, but London's tube strike meant I had to forgo that, with the positive upshot that I could resume my usual Twitter antics. See below for today’s result: Peterhouse Cambridge Vs. Corpus Christi Oxford (09.01.17) 8:01pm: Paxman's eyebrows look darker. Discuss. 8:02pm: Levinson has so many names. So many many names. 8:02pm: I'm taking how Levinson says "Hello" as my own. 8:03pm: Sweetenham: pour honey on it. 8:07pm: The lenses of Oxford Fleet's glasses are as thick as Bowen's. 8:07pm: Sweetenham's thick luxuriant hair. ...
