'University Challenged: Thirty-two' (19.03.18)

The downside to live-tweeting University Challenge week-in week-out is you inevitably start recycling the same jokes. The tweets become variations on a theme that’s been tinkered with, sometimes across a whole series. The only problem is that, ultimately, the results are useless, unless they're read whilst watching the programme, so thank God you’re not exerting much mental effort as you do it; it’s not like you’re writing your masterpiece: you’re just passing the time. See below for today’s version of the same old rubbish; tune in next week for a different edit. Fitzwilliam - Cambridge Vs. Emmanuel - Cambridge (19.03.18) 8:32PM: Cambridge, Cambridge, Cambridge, Cambridge. It's always Cambridge (or Oxford). 8:33PM: Tindall: my favourite dating app. 8:34PM: Mistlin looks like a Press Pack-winner who got to host Newsround. 8:35PM: Derby travelled to the studio via a hedge. 8:38PM: Mistlin came to...

'University Challenged 2017/18: Volume Eleven (02.10.17)'

Tonight’s University Challenge was always set to be interesting, as it was a Cambridge Vs. Oxford affair. One thing the show - and the series as a whole thus far - has lacked, however, is a Monkman. Oxford and Canada’s finest manic erratically fringed celebrity has yet to have his University Challenge crown stolen by a new contender to the throne. The closest we got tonight was Emmanuelle Cambrodge’s Derby and his spectacular hair, which stole the show for me, but this was still nothing when compared to the joy I felt each time Monkman appeared on the screen; something tells me he’ll never be bettered. See below for my tweets on tonight's pompous, over-educated student-fest: Emmanuel Cambridge Vs. St Hugh's Oxford (02.10.17) 8:02PM: Derby's hairstyle is an event. 8:02PM: Is Mistlin wearing a jumper, or is that his body? 8:03PM: Cambridge's Derby is studying Physics. I'm studying the physics of hi...

University Challenged: Volume Twenty-Eight (27.03.17)

They say the show ain’t over until the fat lady sings, but in the case of this series of University Challenge, it ain’t over until another team winds up facing the wrath of Wolfson Cambridge, AKA Team Monkman. It’s well known how much humour the man can inject into such a potentially dry and joyless show; every small utterance is delivered with comedic gusto, except you know that no writing was involved. He’s an natural in his unnaturalness and a human antidepressant; I laughed nearly every time he spoke. See below for my mostly Monk-themed tweets; there’ll only be more to follow when he returns next week. Emmanuel Cambridge Vs. Wolfson Cambridge (27.03.17) 8:03pm: Monkman: a God Amongst Monkmen. ` 8:04pm: Monkman's made special effort tonight with his hastily scissored fringe. 8:05pm: Monkman has the look of a man who's delighted to be sitting on his spike. 8:07pm: Thomas Moore Moore Moore...how do you ...

University Challenged: Volume Twenty-Four (13.02.17).

Tonight’s episode of University Challenge was the first I’d seen as it went out in weeks. In the interim, every time I’ve missed the show, I’ve covered it here after the event, in a ‘see what I would have tweeted’ stylie. While this suits my OCD to a point, it’s never quite the same feeling of spontaneity I get when tweeting along with the show , as there’s something less - dare I say it - exciting about it. There’s no sense of opening a dialogue when you’re just writing it on Word to please yourself; it’s nice to have the Internet to bounce off of. See below for tonight’s Tweets; brace yourself for the inevitable thrill. Emmanuel - Cambridge Vs. Corpus Christi - Oxford (13.02.17). 8:01pm: Paxman looks weary. Oh so weary. 8:03pm: Tom Hill's borrowed Joe Brown's hair for the evening. 8:03pm: Homer's Odyssey: D'oh. 8:05pm: Venkatesh's smile is reminiscent of an unrepentant Bates. 8:07pm: ...

University Challenged: Volume Twenty-two (30.01.17)

Unfortunately, I missed this week’s University Challenge when it went out as I was out myself, gigging. I couldn’t not (double negative) cover the show, however; not when Bobby Seagull was one of the contestants. He regularly ribs me on Twitter if don’t tweet anything about it, though this time, he must have been furious as he didn't even bother. So this is for you, Bobby Sea. Please, forgive me; I know not what I (didn’t) do. Warwick Vs. Emmanuel - Cambridge (30.01.17)   8:00pm: I like to think the ringing double-bass note in the #UniversityChallenge theme tune is plucked by Roger Tiling, while Paxo holds the instrument.  8:01pm: Don't mention the sling.  8:01pm: Van's voice sounds like it comes from behind him.  8:02pm: "Let's just get on with it". Paxman has somewhere to be. 8:03pm: " Why don't you all f-f-five pence away?"  8:03pm: GO Rudd, with your "......

'University Challenged 2016/17: Volume Six (15.08.16)'

It’s when you average more than a Tweet per minute whilst watching University Challenge that you realise you should maybe take a step away from your internet-enabled device. Perhaps it was the lungfuls (sic?) of cool clear Scottish air I took on board when standing at the top of Edinburgh’s Carlton Hill today, during my day off at the Festival that left me trigger-happy with my posts. I couldn’t possibly comment. Whatever the cause, I couldn’t help myself. See below for this week’s 140-character carnage; I apologise to any higher-educated contestants I have offended in the process. Emmanuel - Cambridge, Vs. Nottingham (15.08.16) 7:29pm: What bunch of gimps will we meet today? # UniversityChallenge 7:30pm: Never trust a man with Seagull for a surname. 7:31pm: Bobby Seagull? BOBBY SEAGULL? 7:31pm: "...and I'm reading..." F**k off. 7:32pm: A B.A. in Viking Studies? That'll guarantee a job. 7...
