Always Pressing.

I started my day by trying to get the press release together for the next Hitchin Mostly, which takes place in a fortnight with Kate Robbins and Jay Foreman, so I could send a campaign to our mailing list about it and forward it to the local press.

I’ve written here before of how tired I am of the process of putting together press releases particularly for Mostly Comedy, as it’s such a tedious time-consuming practice I’ve done so often. It’s a necessary evil to help push sales, but it’s so unsatisfying and about as far away from creativity as anything is likely to be. It’s particularly frustrating when you can’t find a solid act bio to work from as it takes so long to draw together a few paragraphs that cover enough to rouse interest while also being well-written. Thankfully my wife gave me a hand this time by writing a rough draft based on the recent press releases I’d sent for the John Thomson Mostly and my show so I had something to work from, which helped make things a little more speedy.

Once the copy was finished and the mailing list campaign had been sent, I did a vocal warm-up and ran through the songs from my show so they start to become second nature again as per Edinburgh. After I’d done that, I decided that was enough show work for one day as I felt I was entitled to have a bit of a Sunday rather than spending every minute rehearsing; as long as I run the show a few times from Monday to Wednesday all should be okay.

Here’s the press release for the next Hitchin Mostly Comedy on 18th October; it should be a good'un:

Press Release – 06.10.18

mostly comedy
a monthly comedy club at the sun hotel in hitchin

Hitchin’s comic duo DOGGETT & EPHGRAVE celebrate the tenth anniversary of their successful monthly club Mostly Comedy on 26th October by hosting a cracking line-up at The Sun Hotel, headed by the multi-talented KATE ROBBINS.

Kate is an actress, comedian, singer and songwriter who first came to prominence in the early 1980s after scoring a half-a-million-selling No.2 hit with the song ‘More Than in Love’ whilst appearing in the TV soap opera Crossroads, before representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest with the group Prima Donna, coming third. She went on to become a prolific voice artist, most notably on the satirical show Spitting Image, for which she provided the majority of the female voices for nine years. Her songwriting credits include the original theme tune for Surprise, Surprise.

As an actress and comic performer, Robbins’ CV is broad, including appearances in The Comic Strip Presents…, Dinnerladies, Victoria Wood: With all the Trimmings, Shooting Stars, The Harry Enfield Show, Phoenix Nights, Last of the Summer Wine and Casualty, plus Dead Ringers and Just a Minute for BBC Radio 4. She is also the sister of comedian Ted Robbins, mother of Inbetweeners star Emily Atack and first cousin (once removed) of Sir Paul McCartney.

Musical comic and Mostly Comedy favourite JAY FOREMAN joins Robbins on the bill. Jay’s a hit with the critics, having received five- and four-star reviews almost across the board for his four sold-out runs at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He supported Dave Gorman on his 2011/12 tour Dave Gorman’s PowerPoint Presentation, and has made a variety of documentaries, with his 2010 film The General Election Xplained winning Gold at the New York Festival.

Have Parker from Thunderbirds and Noel Gallagher ever been seen in the same room? The resemblance is uncanny. So much so, I think something’s afoot. If my suspicions are correct, I've stumbled across a secret that will blow the music and puppet industry wide apart. In the mid-60s / mid-90s at least. It doesn’t take long to see the signposts. There’s the similarity between the name of Oasis’ first single, Supersonic, and Supermarianation, Gerry Anderson’s puppetry technique. The Gallagher brothers would often wear Parkas . Live Forever was clearly a reference to Captain Scarlet and Standing on the Shoulder of Giants to the size difference between Noel and his bandmates. The more you think about it, the more brazen it gets. It’s fishier than Area 51, Paul is Dead and JFK's assassination put together. The only glitch to the theory is scale . According to Wikipedia, Anderson’s marionettes were 1’10” and Gallagher is 5’8”. How does he maintain an illusion of avera...

'...I'm Gonna Look at You 'til My Eyes Go Blind."

Over the past week or two, I’ve been on a bit of a Sheryl Crow kick, largely thanks to rediscovering her cover of one of my most-liked Bob Dylan songs. She has one of my favourite female voices, yet despite this, I only own one CD and that’s just a single (her '97 release ‘Hard to Make a Stand’); on that basis, you can only imagine how much of her back catalogue I’d own if I hated her (it would fall into minus-figures). Dylan, conversely, takes up more of my collection than anyone else, save The Beatles and Paul McCartney’s solo work. He’s one of those artists who, when you get him, you really get him - and once I’d tuned into his style as a student, I'd time and again be blown away by his lyrics; he’ll have more jaw-dropping imagery in one track than other people fit in a whole career. These days, I mostly listen to music in the morning when getting ready, and more often than not, this will consist of a suggested YouTube playlist when I’m in the bath, r...

"Speaking Words of Wisdom, Let it Shine."

Tonight saw the second instalment of BBC1’s latest advertise-a-musical-for-months-and-then-cast-it-with-performers-too-inexperienced-to-do-it-a-thon ‘Let it S̶h̶i̶t̶e̶ Shine’ (or as I call it: ‘REAL AUDITIONS ARE NOTHING LIKE THIS’). I didn’t watch it (clearly), but being reminded of how angry seeing just five minutes of it made me last week caused me to mull over what I would call a musical based on the band’s songbook, if I was responsible for it. Here are a my suggestions: IDEAS FOR TITLE OF A TAKE THAT MUSICAL: Barlow! Dirty Fat-Dancing Orange! A Million Love-changes-everything Songs Owen! Howard's End Pray Misérables Mamma Marka! Babe (with a pig as the lead) …BUT MY FAVOURITE HAS TO BE: Jason & His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. "It was Orange, Orange, Orange, Orange..." (TAKE) THAT’S ENOUGH OF (TAKE) THAT.
