Within minutes of getting up this morning, I had decided to set to work on putting together a press release for this month's Mostly, if only to make the most of a spare moment.

As I've moaned here countless times before, a backlog of admin always means I spend the tiniest amount of time working on my actual shows, so I was determined not to let this be the case today, hence the reason I was writing so early. It's all about using pockets of time that almost feel like they don't exist and thus making the most of them; so it was that I was busily Googling Davro over my Crunchy Nut Cornflakes.

23rd May’s installment of DOGGETT & EPHGRAVE’s popular monthly club Mostly Comedy at Hitchin’s Sun Hotel features a guest appearance from the legendary BOBBY DAVRO alongside work-in-progress from local comic DAVID EPHGRAVE.

Davro - born Robert Christopher Nankeville - is a comedian, actor, singer and impressionist who’s been a familiar face in the UK since his major television breakthrough on the ITV variety show Live From Her Majesty’s in 1983.

His fame reached its peak in the mid-to-late 80s, when he appeared in his own primetime Saturday night shows Bobby Davro on the Box, Bobby Davro's TV Annual and Bobby Davro's TV Weekly, all for ITV, which topped the ratings for six consecutive years and made him a household name throughout the country. He then switched to the BBC in 1991 to make three more series: Public Enemy Number One, Rock with Laughter and the children’s game show Run the Risk.

In recent years, Davro has delved further into acting; most prominently, playing Terry Lonsdale in ITV’s Footballers’ Wives and Vinnie Monks in BBC1’s flagship soap EastEnders. His also no stranger to primetime reality TV, having competed on Celebrity Big Brother and Come Dine With Me for C4, and ITV’s Dancing on Ice. 

DAVID EPHGRAVE is a comedian, actor and musician, whose material recently made it into the Daily Telegraph’s 20 Funniest One-liners of the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe and Comedy Central’s 35 Funniest Jokes of the Year.

Credits with Doggett & Ephgrave include eleven seasons with The Comedy Project at the Soho Theatre, plus countless shows on the Edinburgh, Brighton, Camden and Leicester Fringe. In 2013, they performed an episode of their sitcom Nick & Joe in London’s West End, alongside a cast that included Michael Barrymore and Norman Lovett (Holly in ‘Red Dwarf’)


David’s solo acting credits include playing John Lennon and Paul McCartney in the No. 1 UK tour of The Roy Orbison Story, Buddy Holly in numerous UK / Ireland tours of Buddy Holly and the Cricketers and Richard in the West End production of Dreamboats and Petticoats. He took his first solo stand-up show, ‘…and Ephgrave’ to the 2015 Brighton & Camden Fringe Festivals, his second, Mostly David Ephgrave, to Brighton and Edinburgh in 2016, his third, Now Who’s a Comedian?, to Edinburgh in 2017 – and is set to take his fourth, David Ephgrave: My Part in His Downfall, to Edinburgh in August 2018. He has also kept a daily blog for five years.

The gig will be emceed by the “polished, natural comedians” (Camden Fringe Voyeur) DOGGETT & EPHGRAVE. The gig takes place at the Sun Hotel on Wednesday 23rd May. Doors open at 7:30pm, with the first act on at 8:00pm. Stevenage: A (Tiny) River Runs Through it.

If ever a river was mis-sold, it’s the Roaring Meg in Stevenage. I just walked past it on my way to the retail park that has taken its name. They’re similarly uninspiring. The river is less of a roar and more of a dribble; cystitis sufferers produce greater flow. The retail park is soulless. What was once a thriving enterprise is nearly devoid of atmosphere, save an underlying essence of emptiness and despair. With a Toys R Us. When it was first built I was excited. Back then, the thought of a bowling alley, an ice rink, a Harvester and a Blockbuster Video within a small surface area was enticing. I celebrated many birthdays on site. Hoo-ray and up She Rises.

So much has happened since my last post in March that this blog risks sounding like an itinerary. The main news is that Hitchin Mostly Comedy will return in the summer at a new venue, the Queen Mother Theatre . The road to this decision was convoluted, though enough fell into place en route to leave me optimistic about this new start. The catalyst was a survey I ran via our mailing list a few months back, in which I asked, "If the club returned in the current climate, with tickets still around £15 (and with similar line-ups), would you still attend?"; the response to which, in simple terms, was a resounding yes. Nearly 250 mailing list subscribers responded in a single week, with around a hundred also taking the option to leave some feedback. And only two people were abusive, which counts as a win when you consider they posted their comments online anonymously.
