NIght Owl and the Pussy-cat.

I’m too tired to write anything much of note today, partly because I’ve had a lot on and partly because I keep going to bed too late at the moment. It doesn’t help that I tend to get sucked in by my cat who - like now - chooses to sit on me in the evening and fall asleep on my lap for as long as physically possible if I’d let her. It’s nice to have her company and she’s always comforting, but I do let her keep me up for longer than I should. Part of the problem today was she’d spent much of the afternoon while I was rehearsing my show pestering me to sit down. She’s a creature of habit, who expects things to happen at certain times of the day, and there’s definitely a point late afternoon when she’d expect me to be on the sofa with her if I’m at home; God forbid I mess with the system. Speaking of runs, I enjoyed going over my show today, which was slightly surprising, considering the last time I did it I had an annoyingly crap review. Some...

Past My Bedtime.

Today, I’m feeling the tiredness of a person who had very little sleep last night. To be fair, I kind of brought it on myself. While I had Mostly Comedy yesterday, I actually didn’t get home that late - say about 1am - but after staying up to write my blog over a cup of tea and a cuddle from the cat, one thing led to another and it was suddenly pushing 3am and I still hadn’t gone to bed. The thing is, I don’t like to go to bed straight away after coming in from a show. I’m usually too wired to sleep, so purposely stay up to unwind for a bit with a book or by watching an episode of The Simpsons; it’s important to have some down time, rather than just rushing from one thing to the next. Today, I’ve been paying for my stupidly late night. So, I won’t stay up too long now writing this. I cancelled my plans to meet a friend in London, as I knew I wouldn’t be exactly sparkling company, which was a shame, but we’ll hopefully reschedule for next week. It’s always best to not do too much the da...

Blue Days, Black Nights, Afternoon Delights.

I took a bullet for another comedian at last night’s late gig. I was booked to do a set at the Cow Café at the Underbelly on a mixed bill that started just after midnight; exactly twelve hours before my next show. I was a little reticent about doing it, as it was late, and I’d not had the best day. I felt a little brain-exploded and anxious, due to over-tiredness, and didn’t want to do anything that would contribute to this and stoke it; something told me that the environment I was set to enter would do exactly that. Thankfully, watching Ashley Haden’s excellently vitriolic debut solo show ‘We Are AllCunts’ before the gig helped blow the cobwebs out of my head and re-evaluate. It took me a while to find the venue, The Crags Bar, as it’s a bit of a way out; I knew the name of the pub through staying in thw Newington side of town a few times with Glyn, but pictured it being closer to the Meadow Bar than it was. I found the venue with a few minutes t...
