Proper Goosey Gander.

Annotating the political dross that's come through my door to send it back to the parties in question minus a stamp - and with their own headquarters as the return address - was my good deed for the day. It felt good to have a right to reply, rather than just seething to myself when I received them it and this going no further. I don't want to be on the mailing list of companies like this (which was the case with the UKIP and Brexit Party, both of whom actually sent me the leaflet). It's a load of sensationalist bullshit, designed to stoke up hatred to get what it wants. They don't care about spreading misinformation as long as their rhetoric brings about the desired end result, which in this instance it probably will; it's very depressing., Stlll, at least I managed to make my point...and their expense, hopefully. (Let's be honest though: when it comes to people in thin veils, Farage just isn't interested. I can't trust a party whose p...

Ephgrave's Eurovision 2017.

People of my age and their parents tend to have a different vision of Europe (see what I did there?) hence the result of last year’s EU Referendum; consequently, I can’t imagine many Daily Mail-reading UK residents beyond retirement age enjoying last night’s Song Contest, despite having grown up with it too, when the vast majority of them made it clear they'd like to keep mainland Europe at a distance (unless they live on the Costa del Sol). This certainly isn’t the case for me, particularly when faced with such out-and-out camp; Eurovision is always entertaining, notwithstanding the fact my taste in music is so at odds with the competition’s usual fare. So it was that I found myself in front of the TV tonight with my wife, a couple of beers and a range of Euro-snacks, tweeting along to proceedings. See below for my unsolicited commentary: 8:02pm: Twice this year, my TV stopped working at a key moment: once as Big Ben stuck midnight on New Yea...

Out in the Wilderness.

From my personal political standpoint, today was a very depressing day.  I got home from packing up Mostly Comedy late last night, shattered by the events of the day; so much so that I barely remember writing my blog, as I was falling asleep as I did it. Literally; I woke up on my sofa at 5am, with my cat on my lap and a crick in my neck - but no sooner had I checked the BBC News website and seen the lay of the land Re. the Referendum than I knew I wouldn't get back to sleep easily. The political landscape had changed in a day; the deal that was struck six years before my birth was unravelling: Britain was about to leave the EU.  I watched Tuesday's BBC Referendum debate with irritation. Were we not supposed to notice the Leave campaign's decision to use the soundbite "take back control" in answer to very question?; a statement that's as vacuous as it's lacking in substance or meaning. Were we meant to be oblivious to the thin veneer between Boris Johnso...
